Hidden Containers

I put straw over the top of the jugs just so that maybe the deer wouldn't knock them over. I sprayed the staw with ammonia just lightly. I also did this because I did not want the neighbor around them either.
Here is a picture of the bird cages I built this last fall so that I can put my climbing vines on them, well under the straw are all the jugs :))

Thanks to our good friend Sue, from Michigan for sharing her photos.

Tammy's Bottles

I live in central Wisconsin where the weather can be rather cold in winter. I planted about 37 containers last night, mostly gallon milk jugs. When I woke up this morning they were all covered with a fresh blanket of snow. I kept a record of the types of seeds that I planted. I can hardly wait for spring to see my new sprouts!

A Variety of Containers

I love sowing seeds into a great variety of containers. If its got plastic I can see through I'll sow seeds into it. When I go to the supermarket its the container that catches my eye and makes me put it into my cart.

Flat Creativity

Rita writes: Thanks to my sons, I now have a digital camera. They make a great team and give great Christmas presents!

WSEO note: You've got wonderful boys Rita! Give them a hug and kiss from us and give yourself one too!

To bend the fence,

set the flat on top

and pull the ends up. Slide the flats off.
The piece has bends just where you want them.

These are large newspaper pots inside plastic donut boxes.

Slide the flat into a bag and gather the excess to one side. Roll up the side so it fits tightly.

Twist tie the ends.

Poke holes with a hot nail. (Last year I cut slits in the bag while it was folded but found it was harder to pull it taught.)

Many thanks to our Winter Sowing friend "Rita from PA" for sharing photos of her very creative flats.

Paper Pots in Grape Boxes

I picked the containers up from a Top's supermarket. I had read a post somewhere, maybe here, that these would make great containers. I drilled three small holes down the center of the bottom of each container. I then put a couple of sheets of newspaper on the bottom of each container (to keep the dirt from falling out). Next, I added about an inch of dirt and put in my paper pots. I filled each with dirt and watered all the pots when finished filling. Last, I added my seeds, inserting a label in each pot as I went along. Also annotated on my list (I use Excel) the number and name of seed to coincide with each pot. A few seeds missed the pot and are growing in the dirt surrounding the pot. Put hangers corner to corner. Cut slits in plastic garbage bags and put containers in bags. Tie bags with twisties; if handle bags, tie handles tight. Put outside and wait.
