Saving seeds from the best tomatoes we grow gives us ample seeds for growing again in the coming years; it also gives us extra seeds for sharing and exchanging with family, friends and other gardeners. Throughout your growing season keep a keen eye on your tomato plants, observe them for signs of diseases or pests and respond to the problems. Cull plants that do not improve with treatment. Failing plants should be removed from the garden; do not add them to the compost heap, instead bag them up and put them out with the trash. When saving tomato seeds start by selecting ripe tomatoes from the healthiest and most productive plants so their good traits can be passed down in seeds to the next generation. Store dried tomato seeds away from direct light. For ideas about storing and organizing seeds click here.
